Grave: Burial ground

Grave have always been a favorite of mine. Their early stuff is class A and recently they’ve been making quite a bit of a comeback. “Burial Ground” sounds like a amalgamation of the Tampa scene and the Stockholm scene, with some early Celtic Frost thrown in. I can’t fucken praise these guys enough… I mean shit. The best grunter in the fucken WORLD (Jörgen Sandström) left their band, they put out a shit record. Made a minor comeback in 2002, and now they’ve culminated all their influences, all of death metal for fucks sake, into one fucken record that is old school and fresh all at once. Fucken domination right here.
The first thing that jumped out at me were the kick drums. They sound like fucken drums, not a VST (the sample that is triggered by a drum trigger). Admittedly there are points where the kick is felt rather than heard. It doesn’t matter though, the full on double pass parts make up for it all. Ronnie’s got his shit together.
Then there are riffs. Ola lays it the fuck down on this record and his vocals are stronger than ever. Classic Swedish licks are mixed with Tampa-esque chugging with a buzzsaw tone. Like all good Swedish death the bass guitar is present and overdriven.
Cover art is pretty cool too, a head with some crucifixes on it, and a predominant old school vibe. Tentacles and shit. Looks kinda Lovecraftian…
I have to give this record a nine. I popped this fucker on when I went cycling to school the other day and almost punched a motherfucker, fucken death metal that makes you violent and almost gets you driven over by a car.
